The first time I met Oscar de la Renta was in 2008. I had just started working for Rachel Zoe and we were in New York for Fashion Week looking for Oscar gowns for Jennifer Garner. We were filming the first season of the Rachel Zoe Project and Mr de la Renta had agreed to be on the show since he and Rachel were so close.
I was incredibly nervous to meet him because to me, he was the ultimate in creating amazing gowns for some of the most memorable red carpet moments. I wore my navy blue and white cricket jacket by Ralph Lauren which I was saving for a special occasion. Mr. de la Renta was so nice, welcoming and elegant. I was surprised how lovely and gentle he was. He walked us through his collection and new shoe and jewelry line, which he was about to launch.
When we were walking out he mentioned that he liked my jacket and asked the designer. I couldn’t believe he was complementing me so I said excitedly “Ralph Lauren!” He said “ohhhhhh!” which indicated to me that they perhaps weren’t friends. Everything was going so well, I thought. We laughed about it and he saw us out of the showroom like the gentleman he was.
One of my favorite red carpet moments I have had as a stylist is Jessica Alba at the 2013 Golden Globes in a strapless coral mermaid gown from their pre fall collection. I saw the gown when I was at the runway show in New York and I knew I had to have it! I knew it was the one!
I also love Rashida Jones in his watercolor print cocktail dress that she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards. It was cool, modern and elegant all at the same time. To this day, it is still one of her favorite dresses that she’s worn.
Something special happens to a woman when she puts on a dress or gown by Mr. de la Renta. I’ve seen it many times after the zipper is zipped. It’s magical!
I feel very fortunate to have met Mr. de la Renta and to have the opportunity to work with his masterful designs.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be greatly missed.
With love,
Brad
