Jill Stuart Spring/Summer 2012
In honor of New York Fashion Week, I thought I’d show off my keen knowledge of fashion history (a.k.a. Thanks Google!). Here are five things I bet you didn’t know about Fashion Week:
NYC was first! The first Fashion Week was held in New York City in 1943 in order to divert attention from French fashion during World War II and put the spotlight on America’s talented array of designers instead. Famed fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized it. (Thank you Eleanor!) Let’s hear it for America—leading the fashion frontier!
Press Week, really? Fashion Week was originally called “Press Week” to showcase American fashions to journalists.
The Big Four. After Fashion Week sweeps through New York City, it goes to London, Milan, and Paris (in that order). These cities are known as the Big Four since they are the world’s biggest fashion hotspots.
Timing is everything. Fashion Week happens twice a year. Fall collections are shown in the spring prior and spring collections are showcased the preceding fall. Confusing, right?
Don’t blink! The average runway show only lasts between seven and 20 minutes.
What do you want to know most about Fashion Week? Any myths you’d like me to bust?
x Brad
